Medical Temporary Deferral - FAQs

Medical Temporary Deferral - FAQs

Why was I deferred?
A medical temporary deferral means our medical team has asked you to wait before donating to ensure that it is safe for you to donate and that you meet required donation guidelines. In many cases, you may be able to donate again once certain conditions are met.

What might I need to do before returning?
Your next steps depend on the reason for the deferral. Common situations include:
  • Waiting for symptoms to fully resolve. If you were experiencing symptoms (for example: a recent illness, injury, or other temporary health concerns), you may be asked to wait until you are fully recovered and symptom-free.
  • Waiting until you are no longer taking a specific medication. Some medications require a waiting period. You may be eligible to return after you have completed the medication and any required waiting time has passed.
  • Providing additional health information. In some cases, our medical team may need additional details or clarification about your health history (for example more information about a past diagnosis). Once that information is reviewed, we can determine if you’re eligible to donate.

When can I come back?
You may be able to return once the condition related to your deferral has resolved, you have finished the medication, or you have the requested information available for our medical team.
